Surviving the 8-10 Month Sleep Regression

What You Need to Know

Just when you were finally getting some solid sleep, your baby’s sleep routine takes a turn. Welcome to the 8-10 month sleep regression! It can feel like a step backward, but don’t worry—it’s a completely normal (though frustrating) phase. Let’s break down what’s going on, how to spot it, and what you can do to get through it with your sanity intact.

What is the 8-10 month sleep regression?

Well, this sleep regression often hits somewhere between 8 and 10 months when your baby’s sleep habits suddenly go haywire. You might notice more wake-ups during the night, tougher bedtimes, and naps that feel like a game of chance. These changes are usually tied to major developmental leaps and growing independence. Remember how I often call sleep regressions, sleep PROgressions? That’s why! 

How to recognise the 8-10 sleep regression:

  1. More night wakings: Babies who once slept for longer stretches might start waking multiple times during the night.

  2. Nap troubles: Daytime naps may suddenly become shorter or harder to nail down.

  3. Fighting sleep: Bedtime battles or long stretches of crying before sleep might become the new (temporary) normal.

  4. Clinginess or fussiness: Your baby may seem extra attached to you during the day, and that separation anxiety can spill over into the night.

Why does it happen?

The 8-10 month sleep regression can feel rough, but understanding the “why” makes it a bit easier to handle. Here are the main culprits:

  1. Developmental milestones: At this age, babies are learning big skills like crawling, pulling up, cruising, and babbling up a storm. Their brains are so busy mastering these new abilities that sleep often takes a backseat.

  2. Separation anxiety: As babies grow more attached to their caregivers, they may have a harder time being alone at night.

  3. Changes in sleep patterns: Around this age, babies sleep needs are shifting.

  4. Teething: New teeth coming in can also add discomfort and disrupt sleep.

Will every baby go through the 8-10 month sleep regression?

This sleep regression is caused by developmental changes. These changes will happen for every baby, but not every baby will experience huge sleep disruptions. This depends on temperament and their ability to self settle. 

Know that this phase is temporary, and it’s okay to loosen up on the schedule a bit to meet your baby where they’re at.

What you can do about It:

Stick to a routine: Babies thrive on predictability. Keep your bedtime and naptime routines consistent with activities like a calming story, a lullaby, or quiet cuddle time.

Create a soothing sleep environment:
Make sure your baby’s room is dark, cool, and peaceful. A white noise machine can help drown out any distractions.

Offer comfort wisely: When your baby wakes up, try to comfort them without forming new sleep crutches. Gentle strokes, soft shushing, or sitting near their crib can reassure them without undoing their ability to self-soothe.

Be patient with naps: Naps can be tricky during this phase. Offer naps at the usual times, but don’t force it. If a nap is skipped, don’t stress! Consider an earlier bedtime to prevent overtiredness.

Help with separation anxiety: Practice short separations during the day to build your baby’s confidence. Games like peek-a-boo can help them understand you always come back.

Address teething discomfort: If teething seems to be a problem, offer natural remedies like a chilled teething toy or a gum massage to ease their discomfort. When your little one seems to be in pain, offering a pain killer can be an option too.

Adjust expectations: Know that this phase is temporary, and it’s okay to loosen up on the schedule a bit to meet your baby where they’re at.

How long does this sleep regression last? 

A regression usually lasts about 2 weeks. Staying consistent in your approach is the best way to make it through this phase.  The 8-10 month sleep regression can test your patience, but it’s also a sign that your baby is growing and hitting exciting milestones. With a little extra love, consistency, and flexibility, you’ll both make it through this phase.
